Finally, a full rotation! =) I was planning on doing a different theme but decided to save it for later, so these are just some recent releases that I wanted to share. Everytime (ft Baby G) - Dream Girls Korean | Pop After being quite impressed by their song Hey, Mr., I was looking forward to hearing this song. I'm still undecided about it. It's a simple, sweet pop tune. However, I felt that the thing I liked most about them - their strong, clear vocals - was lacking in this song. Instead, their voices come across as very light and wavering, making Everytime sound watered-down - especially in the chorus, which should really be the strongest section. It's a cute song, but not nearly as solid as their debut. Heartbeat - 2PM Korean | Pop/Dance I know everyone probably already has this song or has at least heard it, but since I'm not a big 2PM fan I thought I'd share one song that I do like from them. What really appealed to me about this song was the staggered feel and how each word or phrase seems to be coming from a different place or level, especially in the chorus. It's got a good beat and I really like the accompaniment - the synths and strings blur together at times, and are distinct at others. 너에게 약속하는 7가지 - Tei & Kan Mi Yeon Korean | Pop/Ballad I love Tei, although this song is a bit different - rather than a very classic, dramatic ballad like most of his songs, it's sweet and pop-influenced, opening with bright upbeat piano and synths. While the sugary intro didn't really appeal to me, it quickly tones down to a tolerable level - Tei's rich, powerful voice suits the lighter atmosphere of this song surprisingly well. I've never heard any of Kan Mi Yeon's songs, but her light, clear vocals are a nice contribution, although I would have liked to see more of a connection between the two singers. A warm, lovely midtempo ballad. 時を止めて (Toki wo Tomote) - Tohoshinki Japanese | Ballad I love this song. From the a-capella style first lines, I was hooked. It's incredibly heartfelt and genuine. This isn't a very good quality rip, I'll try and post up a better one if I find one, but even from this rip I can tell this is going to be a gorgeous song. It's a midtempo pop ballad with splashes of R&B and a warm, rich atmosphere. My Style - Mao Denda Japanese | Pop/R&B I've uploaded some of her songs in the past, this is her latest single. Mao Denda is really growing on me, her latest singles have all been pretty strong and My Style is no exception. Her strong, smooth voice is the highlight as usual, against a dense instrumentation of synths and occasionally strings, rooted by a rounded bass and light percussion. The melody is fluid and sweet. 하얀겨울 (With 비즈니즈, 애즈원) (Narr. 이준 Of 솔리드) - Alex of Clazziquai Project Korean | Pop A light, sweet winter song. At first I had mixed feelings about this song - I found it a little too cute and poppy. But it's definitely grown on me, I really love its warmth. The delicate synths add a bubbly touch to the song, and the overall buoyancy and youthful exuberance make for a great pre-Christmas song. 가슴이 사랑하는 법 - DNT Korean | Ballad Most of the songs I've heard from these guys are upbeat and dance-influenced, so this was an interesting change. I found their vocals in the beginning a bit too soft and the accompaniment to be a bit overwhelming, but it backs off after a bit and their voices really shine out - rich, warm, and decadent. Overall this song has a very rounded, polished feel - while still retaining a lot of emotion. Definitely shows their vocal potential, an interesting change of style. 내가 죽어도 - DNT Korean | Ballad DNT stays on the ballad route. A very classic Korean ballad that is reminiscent of SG Wannabe. Again, vocally it's quite excellent, a lot more than I expected from them. More dramatic than the previous song - compositionally it's a bit boring, but again, certainly shows their potential. One thing I do really like is their harmonies. 서랍을 비우다 - Vodka Rain Korean | Soft Rock I love these guys, and was delighted to see they'd released a new mini-album. 서랍을 비우다 is a calm song with gorgeous instrumentation, filled with isolated strings and warm piano. Laid-back and soothing, but definitely not boring. A perfect song to just relax to after a long day. 甘く果てしなく (Amaku Hateshinaku; Endlessly Sweet) - Tohoshinki Japanese | Pop So this isn't as "recent" of a release, but I had it uploaded and thought I'd share. It's an energetic, bubbly song by Tohoshinki, with lots of rich brass and warm harmonies. Like its title suggests, it's sugary sweet - but, a rare occurrence, without being overbearingly so. It's well-balanced and shows their maturity and youthful energy at the same time. 말하고 싶어요 - Rescue Jane Korean | Rock/Ballad I don't know anything about this guy, although apparently he's had some success as an underground artist and this song is from his first mainstream release, Opus 1. Either way, I love his warm, husky voice and the rich piano and string base of this song. Although it seems to be a fairly standard ballad, something about how his vocals come through and how powerful and expressive they are just makes this song so exceptionally good. Recommended! Labels: 2PM, Alex, DNT, Dream Girls, Kan Mi Yeon, Mao Denda, Rescue Jane, Tei, Tohoshinki I have decided to postpone the next rotation (#35) for another week. It was supposed to be posted last weekend, therefore it has been moved to this upcoming weekend. Sorry about the delay, I've been busy with online courses lately. In the meantime, here's a couple songs. 이별복습 - Ock Joo Hyun, The Ray ![]() Korean | Ballad A fairly standard piano-based duet ballad. Vocally, the two make a nice match - The Ray's slightly husky voice paired with Ock Joo Hyun's powerful yet feminine vocals. Pretty harmonies, decent melody, a nice sense of direction too - the song builds quite well. If only it wasn't so cookie-cutter generic, it'd be even better. Either way, definitely worth a listen. I Don't Care - 2NE1 Korean | Pop I strongly disliked both Lollipop and FIRE, so I was only intending to give I Don't Care a cursory listen and then delete it. Sorry to any fans of theirs out there, but vocally, I still think they sound horrible. However, compositionally, I really like this song. It has a certain breezy and laid-back feel that makes it well-suited for the summer, but has a danceable beat and catchy melody at the same time. Much better than the far-too-heavy, over-synthesized FIRE - while I still think they need to step it up a notch vocally, this is definitely an improvement. 勇气 (Yong Qi/Courage) - Fish Leong (梁静茹) ![]() Mandarin | Ballad This song should've been on my Top 10 Ballads list, but I didn't have it on on this computer until recently. It's a hopeful, genuine ballad, yet it's fairly pared down as far as accompaniment goes, and not overly dramatic. Fish Leong's melodic, light voice is gorgeous, and the chorus always gets stuck in my head. A very recognizable and memorable song. Brave vibration - Anna Tsuchiya Japanese | Rock Anna Tsuchiya's latest single, Brave vibration is a summery rock song with a powerful, catchy chorus. I've never been a big fan of her, but this is an enjoyable song that's well-suited for the summer. 泣きたくなるけど (Naitakunaru Kedo) - Mao Denda ![]() Japanese | Pop/R&B After her impressive debut Bitter Sweet (which I shared in an older post, check her tag if you're interested), Mao Denda finally releases another single. Naitakunaru Kedo is a beautiful, piano-based R&B ballad. On the first listen it seemed a little bland, but it's really grown on me. Mao Denda's emotional, smooth vocals are gorgeous. While I still prefer Bitter Sweet to this song, it's definitely a close contender. Light & Shades - Mao Denda Japanese | Pop/R&B The b-side to Naitakunaru Kedo, Lights & Shade is a more upbeat number, but keeps in style with Mao Denda's other songs - steady R&B percussion, and a strong use of piano in the accompaniment. A decent but not outstanding song. Labels: 2ne1, Anna Tsuchiya, Fish Leong, Mao Denda, Ock Joo Hyun, The Ray In the last poll, it seemed like people liked the idea of having one full single/mini-album in a post and then some individual songs, so that’s what I’ve decided to do this week. The "top ten" theme will continue next rotation (in 2 weeks) with top 10 rock songs. Please remember to comment/leave a rating. ![]() Noblesse - Sadness Korean | Pop/Hip-Hop/Ballad 1. 이별의 전주곡 (Ibyeoreh jeonjoogok) 2. 이별통보 (Feat. 서진영/Seo Jin Young) (Ibyeul tongbo) ![]() 3. 이별의 전주곡 is a gorgeous piano intro, clocking in at a fairly short 1 minute 42 seconds. It's lyrical and filled with warmth. It has a lot of depth and density, yet at the same time is melodic and pretty. It leads perfectly into the next track, 이별통보 where the piano backs away a little to make room for a slightly bittersweet acoustic guitar line and a lovely balance of Noblesse's deep, accented rapping against Seo Jin Young's breezy yet powerful voice. Noblesse sings a couple lines here and there, but the melody is mostly led by Seo Jin Young. Her voice is sweet, but not sugary or poppy in the least. Out of the more recent releases I've been listening to, this is probably one of the best ballads. 심장이 하나라서 shows Noblesse's singing ability. Although I think he's primarily a rapper, his singing voice is quite good as well. It's not quite as powerful as I would normally like in ballads, but it's emotional and smooth. Not really a stand-out track to me, though. 내 삶은 너였다고 features Oh Yoon Hye, who I have never heard of but has a great voice - very strong and rich, yet wit that same airy quality. This song features a similar theme as 이별통보, with Noblesse mostly rapping and a female vocalist taking the melody, but it's more aggressive and a little darker. It's heavier on percussion, keeps the acoustic guitar but uses the piano more sparingly, and has a heavier bass sound. 사랑 is mostly conversationally rapped verses, almost more like he's just speaking, set against a piano arrangement. It builds a little as percussion is encorporated, but other than that doesn't really go anywhere. Okay, so most of Noblesse's songs sound quite similar. His collabs with female singers are great, but tend to blend into each other if you listen to them all in a row. However, his style is unique, recognizable, and consistent. Sadness has some impressive songs, and is definitely worth a listen, whether you've heard of him before or not. DO THE PANIC - Phantom Planet English | Alt Rock I originally heard this song from the Nano-Mugen Compilation, then realized it was on the Gossip Girls soundtrack. The compilation is to advertise AKFG’s Nano-Mugen festival and features one song from each of the sixteen performing groups. Japanese, American, and UK bands all perform at the festival. This band is from California, as reflected in this feel-good, guitar-driven track. Sour Cherry - The Kills ![]() English | Soundtrack This song is also from the Gossip Girls soundtrack. Ironically, I have never watched the show and don’t think I’d like it, but always here these songs in commercials for it. Which led me to download the soundtrack, which actually has some pretty good songs. Sour Cherry has such a driven, addictive beat, coupled with laid-back, assured vocals. I absolutely love the aggressive percussion in this song. 看袂落去 - Hsiao Hung Jen Mandarin/Taiwanese | Pop/Rock A strongly piano-based track that mixes Mandarin and Taiwanese. Feel-good guitar chords, an overall upbeat feel. The vocal work is lovely - beautifully layered harmonies and echoing, as well as Hsiao Hung Jen’s smooth, confident voice. Lucky - Jason Mraz ft. Colbie Caillat ![]() English | Alt. Rock This song has a strong acoustic feel, relying mostly on minimal guitar chords and a simple percussion line. Splashes of tone and colour are added to the accompaniment by piano and, later on in the song, strings. Their voices compliment each other perfectly - both smooth, warm, and light. The melody is beautiful. The lyrics, although a little corny, are sweet and heartwarming. One of my favourite songs right now. Canvas -Piano Version- - Ken Hirai Japanese | Pop/Ballad i’ve never actually heard the original version of this song, but I really love this piano version. Ken Hirai’s expressive, chocolaty voice is so unique, leaning towards the higher ranges. As expected, the sole accompaniment is a rich, full piano sound that takes care not to outshine Hirai’s strong yet tender voice. It gives the song a pure, genuine sound. Bitter Sweet - Mao Denda Japanese | R&B/Pop A new artist I recently discovered. A mid-tempo R&B ballad. Mao Denda’s voice is perfect for R&B - smooth, creamy, and full. Although composition-wise I found it to be fairly average, her vocals really push it forward. An enjoyable listen. Ji Mo Bao Xiang - Judy Zhou Mandarin | Pop Judging by the name I thought this would be a girl, but ... I was wrong. An uptempo track with strong hip-hop influences. Judy Zhou’s voice is surprisingly sweet and smooth against the grittier beat. Synths here and there, classical Chinese strings, a great hook that features some pretty hard to hit intervals that Judy gets right on. Definitely worth a listen.
