Post-Chocolate Day Mix

Yes, I am still alive. Sort of.

For this post I thought I’d try and compile some songs that are nice and mellow for...well...that time of the year that some people, including myself, don’t really care very much for. Okay. Really I only care about the chocolates and the post-Valentine’s day discounts that come along.

어쩌다 (Hitchhiker Remix) - Brown Eyed Girls
Korean | Pop
I know that the original was posted way back (March 09) but I actually like this version much better (don’t really know what’s with me and remixes). I do like the more house-ish/techno sound this song has although it does kind of kill the meaning behind the song...especially since I find myself kind of bouncing along with the song.

Loveless - Yamashita Tomohisa
Japanese | Pop
The piano medley is simple but still effective in trying to get across the kind of melancholy and inevitable sadness the song talks about. It is a nice mid-tempo ballad, although pretty typical of J-pop.

Loving Loved - Yuya Matsushita
Japanese | Pop
More along the same vein as the last song, Yuya’s song is pretty similar in that he uses the piano to convey the sadness. That said, I do like this song better. I like the overall melody, the base line and the beat even though it’s still a pretty typical J-pop song. It’s the kind of song I’d picture listening to as I’m watching the closing credits of a romantic comedy / drama series.

Cry - MBLAQ
Korean | R&B
In comparison to the other songs, this is probably my favorite. It reminds me of the older, but still classic R&B sound. There’s a part of me that wants me to hear Rain sing this instead of them but you can still hear how Rain’s influence clearly permeates everything these guys do. I love the contrast that the sleigh bells (I think that’s what those are) give.

Best of Me - Michael Buble

English | Ballad
If I could pick THE post-break up song, this would be that song. This takes you through a journey of somebody who’s gone through a really bad break up but was able to find someone else to love. It is a VERY sappy song but it has a good message. I remember watching him sing this live at his concert and thinking that it was an amazing song.

Bye to 2010 and Welcome to 2011

I’m sorry for being so absent lately. Work has been.....insane (and will continue to be for...well...until I get fired or something). Anyway, for 2011, I’ll only be posting once a month.

Happy New Year everyone!!

Make It Last Forever - Sowelu feat. Mihiro
English | Pop
I don’t know if this is a cover of another song but the melody sounds really familiar (old Whitney Houston song maybe?)...Regardless, the english - both pronunciation and grammar - is bang on. The song has a slow-ish tempo which makes it sound really sweet and appropriate if you’re trying to hold on to something.

Beyond the Sea - K

Japanese | R&B
This is from his “best” album but I had never actually heard of him before. =P The way this song sounds at the beginning (a cappella), it kind of reminds me of DBSK’s songs and how they used to harmonize. The rest of the song is mellow and nice and has an older R&B feel to it. His voice kind of reminds me of Toshinobu Kubota’s but not as high or nasally (not sure if that’s the right word).

믿어줄래 (Nothin on You) - Jay Park
Korean | Pop
I randomly heard this song while surfing YouTube and it caught my attention. I was going to post the remix but I thought this would be a better transition. Part of me wishes that this was a 2PM song rather than just Jay’s or even having someone else on the song doing the rap/hooks just so that there’s a bit of vocal contrast (somebody with a lower tone).

2 Different Tears (Robotaki Remix) - Wonder Girls
Korean | Pop
I prefer this version than the original (I actually ignored the original until I heard this one) mainly because it has more of a beat to it and the base line is catchy. There are times when the song can sound a bit tinny and over-processed, but it’s still a really good remix / mash-up.

Drama - Daichi Miura

Japanese | Pop
I only really started listening to this song when I watched the video (it’s the one where it shows just the choreography). I actually like this song better than “The Answer” and Lullaby (still on the fence for this one) even though I’m not really a fan of Daichi’s more techno-sounding songs.

Bird - Yuya Matsushita
Japanese | Ballad
This is a nice mid-tempo ballad and is probably my favorite out of Yuya’s when I want to listen to a relatively happier ballad (ends happy). It isn’t too sappy either. The violins and other stringed instruments give it a nice orchestral kind of feel, which is perfect for the song’s theme.

I Can Soar - JYJ
English | Ballad
I thought this would be an appropriate way to start bringing this mix to an end. It’s just a reminder that whatever comes your way during the rest of 2011, that you’ll probably make it through since you made it through 2010 okay. The English may get a bit...strange...or garbled, but for the most part, the song is pretty decent.

High High - G-Dragon and T.O.P. (Big Bang)
Korean | Pop/Rap
I thought I’d end this mix on an energetic note. I actually really like this song; although that may be because I like Big Bang in general. The song’s got a great beat and base line. And, the more I listened to it, the more I liked it.

Thrown Onto My iPod

Again, you all have my apologies for not posting until now. This is just a quick post that notes some songs that I’ve thrown onto my iPod. There isn’t really a theme tying the songs together, but more like a sampler of what’s on it.

Waiting For U - Acoustic Collabo
Korean | Ballad / Pop
I really like the simplistic sound of this song, just the girl singing, the guitar and a harmonica later on. She’s got a really pure voice that’s mellow and isn’t so high that it makes you think that she’d been sucking on helium. This kind of reminds me of something that Bonnie Pink would release.

Rain U (Tsim Sha Tsui Remix) - HybRefine
Korean | Pop / Techno
This does sound like a typical remixed song, nothing overly special. But it does have a good beat and the rap goes well with it. The effects can get a bit much since the whole thing already has a bunch of effects on it, but it does make the piano stand out more clearly.

I Love You - JYJ feat. Flowsik
English | Pop
This song is okay....my favorite parts are the ones where Flowsik raps. The song gets quieter to show off his rapping and you have Yoochun just throwing hooks in. As for the trio, I kind of wished that they had sang more in the lower registers (this is mostly referring to Yoochun because I think that’s where he sounds the best).

I Can’t - 2PM
Korean | Pop
The song is sweet, albeit sad. The beat is nice and mid-tempo and the instruments compliment the vocals really well. It’s not overly sappy, which is kind of nice.

Haven’t Met You Yet (Cutmore Remix) - Michael Buble
English | Pop?
I was actually walking through a clothing store when I heard this song and that’s when I had to find it and have it on my iPod. I really love the original (one of my favorite songs of all time) and this remix is pretty good too. It gets quiet at the right points but still makes the song more upbeat than the original.

For my next post, I was thinking of doing a continuous mix...any thoughts as to what songs or singers/groups? I can also do a sort of "live" edition where I'd mix some of their live songs into a mini concert....

Trick or Treat

Full Moon (Live) – Namie Amuro
Japanese | Pop
The instruments remind me of the old school horror movies with the strings creating a dark and sinister atmosphere. The overall sound of the song reminds me of what it would sound like if you were visiting a haunted house on Halloween – a little creepy but still a lot of fun.

Still Doll – Kanon Wakeshima
Japanese | Pop
Dolls have always creeped me out and this song is creepy in its own way. I mean, the song has Kanon talking to a doll named Alice. The cello and other stringed instruments give this song a dark kind of feeling, kind of like if you were stuck in an abandoned house at night. And it contrasts nicely with Kanon’s voice.

Sakasama No Chou – Snow
Japanese | Pop
This is the opening to “Hell Girl” (Jigoku Shoujo). If you’re into creepy anime with interesting stories, then this might be something to check out tonight. The song has a nice mid-tempo beat and I like the addition of the record scratches (gives it a more contemporary feel) and how it contrasts with the more acoustic feel of the guitar.

Electric Heart – SHINee
Korean | Pop
We’ve now reached the treat side of the mix. The guitar kind of reminds me of Justin Timberlake’s Seniorita but updated for 2010 and with less of an R&B feel. The song isn’t overly memorable (I like “Your Name” and “Lucifer” better) but still a good song to listen to.

Wizard of Oz – Clazziquai Project
Korean | Pop
Okay. So I was trying to go with a bit of a theme… The electric heart of the Tin Man. Oddly enough, when I think of Halloween, it reminds me of the Wizard of Oz. The idea of being swept away to a weird place with weird people always seemed like something that could happen on Halloween. For some odd reason, this song got stuck in my head – especially the chorus.

I honestly never thought I’d ever do a rotation like this, but some of these were pretty decent so I thought I’d share them with you.

I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – Yuna Ito
English | Pop
If you’re looking for or used to the original Aerosmith version, well…I don’t know how to put this other than this is more of a pop / orchestral version. The guitar edge in the original is…well, gone. The overall sound of the song is more sweet, something I’d picture being included as part of an RPG’s soundtrack (think Final Fantasy). It’s an interesting twist on the original though.

This Love – G-Dragon (Big Bang)
Korean | Pop
I didn’t even know that G-Dragon even did a remake/cover of this song. And…I really like this version much better than the Maroon 5 version. It’s catchier and it definitely plays up to G-Dragon’s strengths. The only thing I don’t like about this song is that I wish they had turned up the base a bit more. Other than that, a solid remake.

In the Still of the Night – DBSK/TVXQ
English | A cappella
One of their best and later (before they “disbanded”) a cappella songs. It’s short and sweet but definitely shows off their singing abilities.

Because of You – 2pm
English| R&B
A cover of Ne-Yo’s song and I believe this was around the time when 2pm had just debuted so their singing isn’t as good as it is now. I wish they had harmonized more and had changed the song up a bit just so it wasn’t a straight cover but it’s alright the way it is.

New York State of Mind – Ken Hirai
English | Jazz
The song’s got a really simple accompaniment (I believe it’s just the piano) but it really lets Ken’s voice shine through. It’s a nice, slow song that almost gives the song a nostalgic and kind of sad feeling. It’s something that I’d picture a sad, struggling artist singing in one of those bars/lounges you see in the movies.

On a side note, any particular songs or themes you'd like me to do for my next rotation? I was kind of thinking of doing a non-stop mix (which may take me longer to put together) but I wanted to get your opinion prior to going ahead with that. Thoughts?

Rotation 52 - Electronic Pop

Hi everyone! Sorry I missed the last post. I’ve been helping my brother move out so that he’s closer to his university (yay brother!). Hopefully this post makes up for it!

Fill This Night – Clazziquai
Korean | Electronic Pop / House
I don’t know why I had never thought to pick up any songs by these guys considering that they are/pretty (as far as I can tell anyway) popular. The song starts out with a slow to mid-tempo beat and more of a jazzy sound. As it progresses, however, it definitely picks up and you hear more of the electronic instruments – definitely reminiscent of nineties Jamiroquai. The vocals are mellow and subdued, perfectly suited for the song. The only thing I wish was different was that the slap base was a little more pronounced.

Baby Love – Humming Urban Stereo

Korean | Electronic Pop
This is the first song of theirs that I had actually ever heard. I do like the base in this song and the overall beat (more mid-tempo-ish). I do think that their vocals (especially the girl) could have been just a touch louder but it still has a good balance. It may be a little too sweet for some people but it’s still a good song to listen to.

Starlight Love – HybRefine
Korean | Electronic Pop
I actually “fell in love” with the instrumental version of this song but the vocal version is just as good. It’s a great upbeat song with more of a jazzy house sound but not as much as the first two songs (which are more on the fusion side).

Delete My Memories – 三浦大知 (Miura Daichi)
Japanese| Electronic Pop
I didn’t really like this song when it first came out and I’m still on the fence…I prefer his more pop/r&b sound but at least this song has a good beat. The electronic piano/organ-sounding thing (sorry, not sure what you should actually call it) got to be a bit much for me but that is what gave the song more of a techno sound. I like the quieter parts where it’s really just Daichi singing and the organ thing acts as more of an accent.

I was going to force having a second Japanese song because I think I’ve been a little heavy on the Korean music as of late…but this was a better song.

Stepping Out – Clazziquai
English | Electronic Pop
This sounds like a more traditional pop song, but it still definitely keeps its jazz house sound. The English is a bit off even though she sounds fine (the lyrics don’t make much sense to me even though English is my first language). It’s got a great beat and the girl’s voice is really nice – not too sweet – and really helps to bring balance to the song.

Mid-Tempo-ish

Follow Me – J-DOGG (라임버스)
Korean | Hip Hop
I was really surprised by this song since I had never heard of him before and I haven’t really been into Korean hip-hop. The song has a great beat, not too fast, not too slow. The vocals go really well, nice and mellow during the chorus, but is still able to contrast well with the rap.

Love Latte (Duet with 유진) – 김진우
Korean | Pop
I’m not too sure about this particular song. The beginning is nice and mellow and I thought it was going to stay with its jazzy sound but then once the chorus starts, the tempo picks up a bit and stays that way for the rest of the song. They also added something to alter the sound of their voices (can’t remember what it’s called) slightly – you hear it more in the chorus – which I’m kind of…weirded out by considering that their voices were perfectly fine on their own.

널 놓치지 말걸 – MC 한새, 스윈(Swin)
Korean | R&B
There isn’t anything overly special about this song. It has a very typical R&B sound to it. I like the singing as opposed to the rap in the song (glad they didn’t do this all throughout the song) since I kind of wished they had someone with a deeper voice to do it.

Keep It Goin’ On – ROM-4 (I think!)

Japanese| Hip Hop-ish
Sorry! I don’t really know who these guys are. All I know is that this is from a drama from a few years ago. It’s got a nice beat to it and I really like the guitar in the background. Both the rap and the singing goes really well with the song.

삶을 살아가 (Feat. Mellow) – J-DOGG (라임버스)

Korean | Hip Hop
Sorry. I couldn’t help ending with another one of J-DOGG’s songs. Similar to the rotation’s first song, it’s got a nice mid-tempo beat and Mellow’s vocals aren’t too high up in the register (works really well and doesn’t make the song sound overly sweet). I think this is my new favorite song to listen to.

All Mashed Up
Sunday, July 25, 2010 posted at 8:51 PM
view single post? / go up? /

LolliGurls – Big Bang, 2NE1 and Katy Perry
Korean | Pop
I thought that this would be an appropriate summer mix since it Katy Perry’s instrumental gives Lollipop more of a beat and it makes it seem more lively. There were times when I thought that they sounded a little off key, but I think the person who remixed the song had to change the pitch in some parts to make it go along with the background. Overall, I think this is one of the best mashes I’ve heard in a while.

Hello – Namie Amuro vs A. Skillz & Krafty Kuts
Japanese/English | Pop/Hip Hop
When I first heard this remix I was really into it for a while. The mix is flawless in terms of its transitions and it all seems to flow really well and the two songs don’t compete for “air time” so to speak. Rather, they seem to compliment each other.

Again It’s You – 2pm vs. Super Junior

Korean | Pop
I think this is a decent mix of the two songs since both their tempos are fairly similar. However, I do think the transitions between the two songs can be a bit jarring at times (can’t really comment on if the words would make sense, sorry!) since during the chorus it can get a bit loud and sometimes I feel like the words get almost cut off.

Juju Lets Go – JUJU vs. M-Flo & Yoshika
Japanese| Pop
It isn’t very common to find a slow-ish mash up since most mash ups are geared towards making songs more upbeat. I think this song’s transitions are pretty good and both m-flo and Yoshika’s vocals go really well with the background since their song is more of a slow tempo song.

Mister Abracadabra – Brown Eyed Girls vs. Kara
Korean | Pop
I was debating whether or not to post another remix of Abracadabra but since most of the song (or at least the part that I like more) is Kara’s Mister. I think the two songs blended well but there are times when the overlap can be a bit much on your ears if you’re not used to hearing two different songs put together with one on the left and the other on the right.

Again, my apologies on being MIA! As an aside, if you have any requests, please either leave a comment or email me at carhithiel@gmail.com

Maybe in Love – Super Junior (Kyuhyun, Yesung & Ryeowook) feat. Park Sae Byul
Korean | Pop
I absolutely love this remake. Their melodies are great and the girl’s voice is nice and sweet. It’s a nice song with the instruments really complimenting the vocals.

We Belong Together – Big Bang feat. Park Bom
Korean | Pop
I always kind of liked this song but kind of also ignored it (don’t know why). I do like the energy they project in the song and the remix overall. The techno beats really do give the song extra punch but do emphasize the parts that they didn’t really sing/rap. Still a fun song though.

Abracadabra (Live Fractal Remix) – Brown Eyed Girls
Korean | Pop
It’s a really good remix…but I do wish their vocals were more complete and consistent. I think the remix is comparable to the original and catchy in its own way. I do like the way that they had decided to remix the song – still keeping it upbeat and not overplaying the techno aspect.

Universe – BoA feat. Verbal & Crystal Kay

Japanese| Pop
Normally I’m a fan of all three (although BoA less than the other two) so I was expecting more from this collaboration. Their vocals are okay and the balance with the background is okay but I was kind of hoping they would mix more of the crowd’s interactions in. As an aside, if you don’t want to hear their talking, just stop the song after the 4:20 mark.

Purple Line – DBSK
Japanese | Pop
I like the rock kind of feel it has with the guitars playing riffs all throughout the song. The deeper and louder drums also add to that kind of feel. I also like the break/interlude in the middle of the song (better if you watch the concert vid though). Overall, a nice song from the boys.

Rotation 47: Percussion Mix

Change My World (Steven Chen Drum Cover) – Monkey Majik
English | Pop
Oddly enough, I didn’t even know this song existed (okay, I ignored it when it first came out for some strange reason) until I heard this drum cover and I was doing “research” for this post. Steven’s rendition is quite close to the original but I do like the extra punch he gives to the song.

Balloons (Live Percussion Version) – Tohoshinki
Korean| Pop/Rock
This is actually the only version of this song that I listen to: it’s mellow and I really like the “lack” of instruments (focuses mostly on percussion and keys). It reminds me of kids selling lemonade during summer and wandering around a fair or a park on a nice afternoon.

Go! Go! Maniac (Drum Cover) – K-On! (Toyosaki Aki, Hikasa Yoko, Sato Satomi, Kotobuki Minako, Taketatsu Ayana)
Japanese | Pop
Oddly enough, I only started listening to this song after I saw a Japanese girl (she was only 13) doing a drum cover. From that point, I got hooked. Normally I’m not into the super high-pitched singers but I paid more attention to the drums than anything else.

One Day (Drum Cover) – Miliyah Kato feat. M-Flo
Japanese | Pop
I kind of wish the drums were recorded with better quality (probably because he used electronic drums rather than actual ones) but still a good song to listen to. The cover really incorporates well with the original song.

Run Devil Run (Moonie Drum Cover) – SNSD
Korean | Pop
Oddly enough, I kind of wish the kick drum was a little more prominent in this version. Otherwise, it’s still a good cover of the original. It almost makes me want to listen more to the original (never really got back into listening to SNSD after Genie).

Funny Bonus: Sexy Back – Leeteuk and Eunhyuk
English-ish | Pop
Warning: this isn’t the best quality. Okay. This just makes me laugh every time I hear it – and it isn’t because they don’t really speak English. It’s because they can’t remember the words. Haha. Just a quick little bonus for everyone that needs a laugh (the video’s funnier because you can actually see Leeteuk start to laugh).

Number Ones?

Okay, so this is more of a play on words. All the song titles have the word "one" somewhere…

As One – Big Mama
English| Pop/Rock
The mix of rock-ish elements with the violin and more classical elements make me think of a more indie label sound. It’s got a decent beat and it does want to make you kind of want to get up and move. The English is a little tough to understand at times, but you can make out enough of it to get the meaning of the song. I can picture it as being the opening theme to an anime with more fantasy elements in it.

One Sugar Dream – M-Flo
Japanese | Pop
It’s a nice, mellow mid-tempo song and the girl’s vocals (don’t actually know who’s singing, sorry) mesh in quite well with the background. I really like the acoustic guitar and simple percussion which make up the majority of the accompaniment, with the violins adding accents.

One – Bi / Rain
Korean | Pop
I think it’s a nice mid-tempo song, but not overly memorable (I like a couple of his other songs better). I do like the fact that he doesn’t try to go into the upper register too often (his mid-range stuff sounds better) and the instruments are relatively simple though.

You Are the No. 1 – Bonnie Pink feat. Kreva
Japanese | Pop
I kind of wish there was either more of a contrast between Bonnie Pink’s and Kreva’s voices, or that they meshed more…I think it’s because I don’t think of Bonnie Pink as an R&B singer (in comparison to Daichi Miura). It’s still a decent song to listen to though, even though it’s not high on my list of favorite collaborations.

One Moment – Monkey Majik
English | Pop
I think the best element of the song is the guitar and how, with the piano, gives it a kind of jazzy/bluesy kind of feel. It’s a nice mid-tempo song, the kind you’d listen to if you were reminiscing about past loves while you’re out on the patio staring up at the stars.

A Magical-ish Journey
Monday, May 10, 2010 posted at 8:03 PM

Sorry for being MIA in the last while. I had to study for finals and that took up a lot of my time. Like my last post, the theme of this post is as though I were in charge of the score for an anime focusing on a magic journey (think older-audience Card Captor Sakura).

Magic – Secret (시크릿)
Korean| Pop
This was actually the song that inspired me to have this theme. Yes, I realize that they’re talking about music but it’s the idea behind music that’s important. It’s catchy but not overly memorable.

Genie (Tell Me Your Wish – Robotaki Mashup) – SNSD
Korean | Pop
I apparently have a thing for remixes/mash ups. It’s one of the more upbeat (can it actually get more upbeat?) versions of the song that ties in more of a techno feel. It almost makes you think of a crazy bunch of SNSD robots…maybe…probably not. Still a good song.

Journey – Satomi
Japanese | Pop
I was actually surprised by her vocals as I hadn’t listened to any of her music previously. It’s surprisingly deep if you compare it to the typical, run-of-the-mill Japanese and Korean singers. I like the jazzy guitar (may be slap base though) that kind of reminds me of a Japanese pop version of George Benson. Nice mellow song.

Break Out – Tohoshinki
Japanese | Pop
And here’s my obligatory DBSK entry. The journey part seems to go along and the whole idea of keeping going even if things get in your way seems appropriate for a rotation about a magical journey. This isn’t one of my favorite songs by them (Doushite and Mirotic take top spots) though (sad considering this is one of the last releases they’ve had).

Super Girl – Super Junior
Korean | Pop
It’s weird…I’ve been on a Super Junior kick lately and this song is no exception. It’s catchy (although not as catchy as “Sorry Sorry”) and I do like the kind of techno feel of the song. I opted to share this version rather than the Chinese one because I liked the flow and the words better. I thought I’d end the rotation with it only because it’s talking about a “Super Girl”.

The Pretend Shoujo Anime Mix
Monday, April 12, 2010 posted at 6:18 PM
view single post? / go up? /

Ummm…so I don’t think my last post went over all that well. Hopefully you all like this one better! So the theme of this post is as though I were suddenly in charge of finding the score for a shoujo anime, complete with the standard troubles and tribulations that a couple would go through.

Kimi Dake – Teppei Koike
Japanese| Pop
I think this would be good as an opening theme. It’s heartfelt, and could easily be edited into a 30-second opening showcasing each of the characters: the boy who’s longing to see the girl and the girl who he loves. And then, the lyrics allude to the stuff they’d have to go through.

My Man – Davichi
Korean | Pop
Oddly enough, I had never even listened to Davichi. In a lot of ways it does express how a girl feels when she’s finally set on a particular guy. There’s that upbeat, happy kind of thinking that everything will work out fine. The beat is catchy and the song is relatively simple but still a good one to listen to.

Why I Like You – Super Junior
Korean | Pop
I think this would be a good background song, especially during the happy times in the fictional anime. It’s upbeat and definitely focuses on the good times of the story, the happiness that everyone experiences when they first fall in love.

If – Tae Yeon
Korean | Ballad
There isn’t anything overly memorable about the song that I can think of, but the theme of being so silly that you let the person you love walk away from you is a great one to have. The song is heartfelt but not overly sappy. It doesn’t sound like she’s about to ball her eyes out, but it does make you think that she regrets what she did.

널 붙잡을 노래 – Rain
Korean | Ballad
Okay, I couldn’t help but end this rotation with this song. It’s sad and heartfelt. Now, it always takes two to break up a relationship: one to actually do the breaking up and the other accepts the break. In this case, Rain doesn’t seem to accept things but he can’t seem to do anything about it except wish for the girl to come back. It would be a good song to end with, although I do think it might be harder to cut it down to the usual ending theme length without losing some of the song’s meaning.

Again, just a reminder, if you have a song you’d like to request, please leave a comment. Alternatively, you can send me an email at carhithiel@gmail.com.

Stand By U – Tohoshinki
Japanese| Ballad-ish
I think the first couple of lines in the first verse (something along the lines of the scenery changing) definitely sets the mood for the rest of the song. It’s a great, sad song, the kind you’d listen to when you’re stuck inside and feeling nostalgic about past loves. It’s not slow enough to be a true ballad in my mind which doesn’t make it as sappy as something you’d listen to while drowning yourself in a tub of chocolate ice cream.

Aoi Kofuko – Noboku

Japanese | Pop
This doesn’t really make me think so much of the rain as it does of what happens after the rain’s done and you’re left with the clouds, the smell of rain, and everything looks grey. Just when the song picks up, it makes me think of what it looks like when the clouds break and the sun starts to come out. Overall, it’s not that memorable; nothing stands out that much, but it’s still a decent song.

Don't Wanna Try (Live Piano Version) – Tae Yang
English | Ballad
It was actually this version of the song that got me to find out about the original version by Frankie J. Tae Yang’s version is heartfelt, sad, and his voice suits the song so well. There’s something about the piano that makes me think of sad things and I can picture him singing this by a window as it’s raining outside (minus the cheering in the background).

Endless Love – Shinhwa
Korean | Pop
This song makes me think more of what a thunder storm would be like, if it were made by a Korean band. It’s edgy and the lyrics, if I remember the translation correctly, are pretty raw and well, kind of almost obsessively vengeful. It’s angry, angsty, and powerful.

Stay – Chris Cayzer
English | Pop
This is a remake of an old Lisa Loeb song that was released as part of his first album a few years ago in the Philippines. He’s kind of re-surfacing now, especially since he’s released his second album. It’s a nice, acoustic version and I love his voice. The song slows down for the verses but picks up every once in a while at key points. It makes me think of what happens in one of those movies where the couple breaks up and right at the end the person shows up at the door, soaking wet from the rain (apparently I’m very much into the visuals right now).

Waking Up in the Morning

First off, I’m so sorry that this post is late. I’ve been having sleeping issues lately (mostly due to work stuff). Before I get on with the rotation, I'm planning to do an all request mix in the next while. If you'd like a particular song included, please leave a comment for this post (leave a comment anyway if you like any of the songs). Anyway, on with the rotation.

Tank – Seatbelts
English| Big Band(?)
The beginning part where the guy talks and says, “I think it’s time we blow this scene. Get everybody and their stuff together. Okay. 3, 2, 1, let’s jam,” makes me think of my morning commute and what I do to get going. It doesn’t feel so much like a mad dash out the door but more like a smooth-ish escapade, kind of like the song. It’s got a good beat, not overly loud but definitely something that makes you want to get up and move. I kind of picture this song to apply more to someone that lives in an urban setting or someone that has to deal with a bunch of stuff (read: people, traffic, pets, etc.) to get somewhere.

Fly – Monkey Majik
Japanese | Pop
This is me on my morning train (it actually leaves at 7:35 as opposed to 7:30, which is the time mentioned in the song), mellowed out and relaxing now that I’ve gotten myself a seat. The song is pretty simple and the beat is mid-tempo with a nice transition to Japanese (the first verse is entirely in English).

Kimi, Meguru, Boku – Hata Motohiro
Japanese | Pop
A nice upbeat song that I listen to if I’m in a good mood in the morning (happens very rarely as I’m not a morning person). It’s upbeat but simple with a lot of emphasis on the acoustic guitar and drums. There isn’t anything overly special that makes this song stand out but still, it’s worth listening to if you want something lighthearted.

New Dawn – Bonnie Pink
Japanese | Pop
This isn’t one of her more famous songs (this was never released as a single) but it’s a nice mellow song to listen to in the morning. I do like the base line in this song – it’s what gives the song depth, especially since it contrasts so nicely to Bonnie’s voice. If you don’t like the sliding guitars sound, you might want to skip the song since it’s prevalent in the chorus.

Happy People – Skoop on Somebody
Japanese | Pop
This is another song that has an emphasis on the acoustic guitar (as far as I can tell anyway). It’s a nice, simple, happy song that’s in the mid-tempo range. Nothing fancy, just…well, happy. In a way, it’s kind of along the same lines as Motohiro’s song, just with the addition of a turntable and with lower range vocals. I think of this song when the sun’s out and there’s been a streak of warm weather.

The "Samples" Mix

Disclaimer: It isn’t that I’m promoting the idea that Korea and Japan are “stealing” songs from North America and making them sound better…I mean, they are making them sound better, but…whatever. Just enjoy the songs…and don’t kill me.

Passion (Remix) – Se7en feat. Jinusean
Korean| Pop
Yes, this was my favorite Se7en song for a short while. For those of you that don’t know, this song is basically a remix of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy”, with the beat sped up and with better vocals. The song’s a great song to dance to and it’s what got me hooked onto Se7en in the first place (I usually find out about different bands/groups/singers through their singles and MVs). The dance moves in the MV are pretty good too.

Foolish Foolish – Yuya Matsushita
Japanese | Pop
As the song progressed, I really thought Yuya was going to start singing Ne-Yo’s “So Sick” since the two songs are so similar. I can definitely picture Yuya singing Ne-Yo’s song with the only complication being the accent. As for which song is better…I couldn’t really say. I think both are equally good.

Again & Again – 2pm
Korean | Pop
Apparently this song sounds an awful lot like Envy’s “Shawty Dangerous”. I don’t necessarily like one version over the other. Okay, that’s a lie. I like 2pm’s version but that’s probably because I think you can dance to it.

New Look – Namie Amuro
Japanese | Pop
Okay. This isn’t really a sampling issue as it’s really a homage to the original (“Baby Love” by The Supremes). It’s a good song, simple but clean and it conveys the sentiments of the sixties. I like the fact that she didn’t defer too far from the original but was able to revive it and give the song a makeover that’s appropriate for this time.

Why I Like You – Super Junior
Korean | Pop
This sounds…okay, it’s pretty much a remixed version of Ne-Yo’s “Closer”. Unfortunately, in this case, I’m going to have to side with Ne-Yo. I think his version is more upbeat and I like his voice better in comparison to Super Junior’s (sorry!). Still a decent song though.

Bittersweet Chocolate Mix

I’m not really one for this “special day”…unless you count my love of chocolate and the fact that all that yummy chocolate goes on sale the day after. So, Happy Chocolate Day!

Puppy Love – Bennie K feat. Gipper
Japanese| Pop
A nice mid-tempo song that isn’t overly sweet. Gipper’s raps provide a nice contrast to Bennie K’s vocals and the simple accompaniment. It’s mellow and sweet, reminding you of what most people think of when they’ve first hit the “love bug”.

First Love – Hikaru Utada
Japanese | Ballad
I personally like the techno version even though it kills the feeling of the song. Since I haven’t heard this song in a while, I thought I’d post it for those of you that missed the song when it first came out way back when. The instruments are relatively simple but complimentary and allow Hikaru’s voice to come through and convey the emotion.

Make Love – Big Bang
English | Pop
Another relatively simple arrangement but I do like the guitar that seems to be main instrument (or at least the one that I paid the most attention to). It isn’t the best song from them (I like Number 1 better) but a decent song to listen to anyway.

1000 Words – Koda Kumi
Japanese | Ballad
Continuing on the theme of bittersweet, here’s another song that’s meant to remind you of loves lost and mistakes made. The piano and violins emphasize the sadness (I always liken sadness to violins and pianos). I like the sound of Sweetbox’s voice better but I think Koda’s voice conveys more of the emotion as there are times when Sweetbox’s voice sounds too sweet and high-pitched for something like this.

How Deep is Your Love? – Jinusean
Korean/English | Pop
It’s my favorite Jinusean song and a decent remake of the original song by the Bee Gees. The faster tempo (than the original anyway) and raps give it a light-hearted feeling even though the original message of the song is meant to be a sad one. Still, it’s a nice mellow version that isn’t as well, deep, as the original.

Mashed Up Remixes

Doushite (Royal Mirrorball Remix) – Tohoshinki
Japanese| Pop
My favorite techno remix thus far, although the change from a heartfelt slow song to a techno-pop sound kills any emotions you might feel from listening to the original. The song is so upbeat and perky that if you don’t know the meaning behind the words, you’d just think it was a nice, cheery song. Still my favorite remix though.

Wild and Violet Sauce vs. Apologize – Namie Amuro & One Republic / Timbaland
Japanese | Pop
This is an interesting twist to the usual remixes out there – meaning the penchant is to speed songs up rather than slow them down – so this is a nice change of pace. It isn’t one of the best mash ups out there as sometimes the overlaying of both of Namie’s songs can sound a bit off but otherwise pretty decent.

Deal With Juliette – SHINee vs. Corbin Bleu
Korean/English | Pop
Technically this is a mash up instead of a true remix but I still like it. I didn’t really listen to the full SHINee version but the mash up is seamless. The beat stays in tact and it’s a good a pop song overall.

Around the World (DJ Mitsu Mix) – Monkey Majik
English | Pop
This remix has more of a jazz/house-ish sound to it. More of the emphasis is on the synths, base and drums than the original, that and this one is the full-out English one rather than the Japanese/English version. A decent mix but nothing overly special.

Hikari (PlanitB Remix) – Hikaru Utada
Japanese | Pop
I thought I’d end of this mix with more of a techno-ish sound. I actually like this version better than the slower, original one. The drums and faster tempo seem to give the song more life.

R&B/Pop-ish Mix

Just Like That Guy – Se7en
Korean| Pop
I can’t believe I had overlooked this song when it first came out. It’s heartbreaking but I can’t help but love it anyway. His singing is amazing and the emotions really come through. It’s now my favorite song of his (for the longest time “Real Luv Song” was my favorite).

Insomnia – Wheesung vs. Craig David
Korean/English | Pop
A nice mash up by Yigytugd. Craig David’s voice goes well with Wheesung’s, almost to the point where the only differing point between the two is the language. That’s probably because it’s the same song and Craig David picked Wheesung to do the cover of his song. It’s got a good techno-ish beat to it but it’s poppy sounding enough for me to think it’s pop.

My Girl – Big Bang
Korean | Pop
Yes, I realize that this is an older song of theirs (the Korean version came out in 2006) but I think it’s a good one. I actually stumbled on this about a week ago (don’t know what caused me to find it though). It’s definitely got a more North American R&B sound to it but you can still tell that it’s Big Bang singing.

You – Rain
Korean | Pop
This is a nice, upbeat song with a kind of jazzy/band-ish sound (I think that just might be due to the base and the guitar). It isn’t that complex in terms of composition and him singing in the higher notes can seem a little weird since I prefer him singing in the lower register; but, still it’s Rain, so I’m kind of biased into thinking it’s a good song.

Nobody (Rainstone Remix) – Wonder Girls
Korean | Pop
Tying in to the theme from Se7en’s song, I thought this song would be a good one to round off the rotation. This remix is a bit of a contrast to the original one for the fact that it’s slow and the background is really simple: a guitar, drums, base, etc. I think it conveys the song’s words better than the original but, then again, I don’t think this version would have sold as well on its own.

By the way, any thoughts on what I should post next? Song requests? Leave a comment if you'd like something specific!

Keep the Party Going

Number 1 – Big Bang
English| Pop
I really like the beat and the base line in this song. It isn’t overly complex but it’s a good party track. I can see why they use it as one of their intros to their concerts.

Do You Like It? – M-Flo loves Crystal Kay
Japanese | Pop
A nice mid-tempo track with a beat you can bop your head to. Crystal’s got a nice, mellow voice that contrasts nicely with Verbal’s (M-Flo) raps. It kind of has a Latin-ish sound to it (at least that’s what I think) which definitely makes it dance-able.

Bo Peep – T-ara
Korean | Pop
Thus far, this is the only song of T-ara’s that I like (it was the first that I had heard). I seem to be oddly, slightly addicted to it (it got stuck in my head right away). It isn’t overly memorable and at times their high-pitched voices can be a bit much (especially if you compare it to Crystal Kay’s voice) but still a good listen.

Inside Your Head – Daichi Miura
Japanese | Pop
This is my favorite Daichi song. It’s got a good beat, a nice base line, and you can definitely dance to it (his PV highlights some nice choreography similar to Justin Timberlake’s – think back to his “Like I Love You” song). Daichi’s voice is mellow and he doesn’t go too much into the higher range (which I think can wreck his voice).

Don’t Talk – Jon B.
English | Pop / R&B
This, I think, is Jon’s only fast track (he’s known more for his ballads). It did come out back in 2000 but it’s a song that’s usually played at the clubs around here. It’s a nice mid-tempo track with good beats, and Jon’s voice suits it really well (I kind of wish he had more of these faster tracks).
