Sorry for my long absence, I was away on vacation for a few weeks in Taiwan and I haven't felt very inspired to make any mixtapes/rotations lately. Anyways, here's a personal mixtape I made, I guess the songs are directed to a person/various people in my life, mostly centred around love/relationships. Hope you enjoy, I'll try to update more frequently in the future! Also, Mediafire wasn't working for me so I used 4shared this time - hope that works for most of you. If you want any songs uploaded individually, feel free to drop me a comment. Also thanks to everyone who left comments on my previous rotation(s), I love reading them. :) - Haruhi ![]() 01. I would list some of my favourites but that's about half the mixtape, haha. I've had Hologram on repeat for the past few days, along with A Girl A Boy And A Graveyard. You can never go wrong with Glen Hansard, Damien Rice (9 Crimes is absolutely beautiful), Mumford & Sons, and The Hush Sound. Surprisingly I really liked Taylor Swift's acoustic version of Haunted, I'm not a big fan of her but I think it's a good fit in this mix. I know this mixtape doesn't really have a concrete "theme" and probably won't seem coherent to anyone but me, but I hope that you find something you can relate to and if not, it's still good music. :) Let me know what you think if you're taking, I love hearing your feedback! Happy New Year everyone! You may have read in Carmi's post that she was only going to be updating once a month from now on. From now on, I will be updating weekly instead of biweekly/randomly like I usually do. I will still probably only post full rotations/mixtapes once every two weeks, but in the weeks in between I'll be making smaller updates. Posts will probably be made on weekends. :) All the best in 2011! - Haruhi ![]() overview: The theme of this mix is a bit difficult to explain. It's for those points in your life when you feel like you've changed; like you're no longer as naive and you are in a way proud of how you've grown, yet sad for the things you've lost along the way. ![]() Sorry it's been so long since my last update! The last few weeks have been a little hectic. I know this is a little late, but I've made a small mixtape of holiday music. To be honest, I can't stand Christmas music. I don't know what it is, I've just never liked listening to Christmas songs. The only exceptions are Last Christmas, Winter Wonderland, and Happy Christmas (War is Over). These are some covers of Christmas classics and some original songs that I do like, and I hope you'll enjoy them too. Happy holidays! ♪ I Wish It Was Christmas Today - Julian Casablancas ♪ Amazing Grace - Sufjan Stevens ♪ Last Christmas - Florence & the Machine ![]() ♪ White Christmas - Michael Buble ![]() ♪ All I Want for Christmas is You - Lady Antebellum ![]() ♪ Christmas Lights - Coldplay ♪ Jingle Bells - Lisa Loeb ♪ I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - AAA ![]() ♪ Last Christmas - Foxxi misQ ♪ We Need A Little Christmas - Glee ♪ The First Noel (사랑해 그리고 기억해) - Son Ho Young ♪ Winter Wonderland - Kangta ![]() ♪ Happy Christmas (War is Over) - Maroon 5 ![]() Julian Casablancas' I Wish It Was Christmas Today perfectly captures the impatience of waiting for Christmas with its energy, while Sufjan Stevens' folk-influenced rendition of Amazing Grace is as unique as the rest of his music. I love how he keeps true to the original while really putting his own, identifying touch on it. I'm a huge Florence & the Machine fan, and Florence's rich voice is simply gorgeous in their cover of Last Christmas, and the acoustic guitar backdrop allows it to shine through even more. I think this is one of the best covers I've heard. Speaking of great singers, you can't go wrong with Michael Buble. I think every Christmas needs a smooth, chocolatey jazz song, and Buble delivers. Lady Antebellum's cover of All I Want for Christmas is You is another favourite of mine, Hillary's clear-cut voice is flawless. Coldplay's Christmas Lights explores another side of Christmas, saying that "it doesn't really feel like Christmas at all", but at the same time, there's a note of hope. Lisa Loeb delivers a completely transformed Jingle Bells, while AAA's I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus is sugary, cute, and quite true to the original. Foxxi misQ, an all-female Japanese hip-hop/urban trio, delivers a pretty, modernized Last Christmas. The modern beat and smooth vocals work well together. I don't really follow Glee, but I do like listening to the show's soundtracks. Son Ho Young's The First Noel is a gorgeous winter ballad, it's a bit slow but his strong voice really makes up for it. Another Korean singer, Kangta's cover of Winter Wonderland works quite well; his English is pretty good. I love Happy Christmas (War is Over), but most covers I hear don't do it justice. Maroon 5's cover is lovely though, it really keeps the message of the original clear. Another mixtape for you, this time jazz-themed. I've meant to a jazz-themed rotation for a long time, and decided to create a two-disc mixtape instead. The first disc consists of instrumental music, and the second, vocal. Further description/review is below. This took a long time to compile and upload, so please comment if taking. - Haruhi ![]() Summary: A collection of jazz songs, ranging from classics from the likes of Duke Ellington to modern bands like PE'Z. This is a highly personal mixtape - by that, I mean that this is not in any way supposed to be a comprehensive sampler of jazz music, but rather songs that I personally like and think would make a good introduction to jazz and could be enjoyed by everyone, and not just serious jazz fans. Tracklist: Disc 1: 01. Akatsuki - PE'Z [PV] Disc 2: 01. Gallop - Pe'zmoku Download: Disc 1: MF [137mb] Disc 2: MF [33mb] Notes: - I'm not sure how the songs are arranged in the .zip file and in what order they will copy into your iTunes (I believe it may be alphabetically by file names), but the tracklist above is the tracklist I intended, for those of you who are picky about stuff like that. - Like I mentioned when I posted my first mixtape here, I don't create/upload .zip files often. If there are any issues, please let me know. Comments: I'm not going to do an in-depth review, but some quick comments about this mixtape for anyone who's interested: PE'Z is not featured four times on this mixtape without reason (five, if you count pe'zmoku, their collaboration with vocalist suzumoku). They are a modern Japanese group who I think, unfortunately, is on an "indefinite hiatus". I would consider them more fusion, they definitely have some rock influences. Their songs are so energetic and catchy; I especially love their piano solos and their pianist has also worked with Shiina Ringo and released some solo material as well. Definitely try them out - even if you don't like jazz. If you like PE'Z, SOIL&"PIMP" SESSIONS is quite similar in style. They're also a modern Japanese band, and while between the two I still prefer PE'Z, they're amongst my favourites as well. They have the same energy and passion. I find SOIL&"PIMP" SESSIONS brass players to be stronger. Both amazing bands that, unfortunately, don't get a lot of recognition - I rarely see their music shared or mentioned, which is why I included a substantial number of songs from both these groups in this mixtape. Percolotor by Spyro Gyra (man that's hard to type) is more of a funk chart, I played this in my school's jazz band last year and it was basically the favourite song of the whole group, so I just had to share it. It's catchy and and has some great solos in it. My favourite is probably the sax. Hiromi is a jazz pianist, so Old Castle, by the river, in the middle of a forest (what's with these names?) is a fast-paced composition that, duh, is focused around piano. The fluidity of this song is quite impressive, and I especially love the part at around 5:25 where it slows down and becomes more chordal, really letting the tone of the piano shine rather than just the notes. Beautiful. Metalwood is a Canadian fusion group, I love the way they blend rock and jazz. The growling bassline in Chronic is just fantastic. Although these guys are a fusion group, their jazz is a bit more intellectual than the two Japanese groups I mentioned above, IMO. However that certainly doesn't make their music inaccessible. I don't think Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, or Diana Krall require any introduction. All jazz greats - I tried to pick songs that are pretty mainstream, but we're getting into "real" jazz here, and these songs are all quite a bit older as well, so they might be more of an acquired taste. Joanna Wang's Latin-influenced Tikiville took a while to grow on me, but it did. I actually kind of hated it the first time I listened to it, but a few more listens have changed my mind. I've uploaded a lot by her in the past, so check the tag if you're interested. She's a young Taiwanese jazz singer, but IIRC she also spent some time in New York. Matt Belsante's rendition of Beyond the Sea is sweet, and while I'm not really a huge fan of him, I really liked it. I've heard his voice compared to Michael Buble's, if that helps. There had to be a jazz standard that pretty much everyone knows here, so we have Georgia on my Mind as sung by Khalil Fong ... I believe I've uploaded this in the past already, but oh well. Khalil Fong isn't a jazz singer at all, but I didn't want to upload a standard version of this classic. More: Here's some links to some straightforward biographies about some of these artists, in case you want to find out more about them.
